Trot Pole Exercises: this exercise tests your horse’s willingness and level of trust.  Be patient and go slow.  If you encounter resistance, make sure your horse has a basic understanding of turning and side passing before working this pattern.  If there are physical restrictions and the horse is having issues with specific parts of the pattern (turning on hindquarters, backing over poles), step out of the exercise and work on that specific exercise on it’s own, taking lots of breaks and giving praise for each genuine try (whether successful or not!).

Feel free to save/print as needed (right click + Save As).

Techniques used: walk/trot, backup, laterals: turns (on hindquarter or forehand) and sidepass.

Trot Pole Exercises 2: Finish the maneuver you’re on before rushing into the next maneuver. Make the halt count by having your horse stand a few seconds before and after turning. Poles should be set 18-20 feet apart to allow for approx. 2 canter strides between poles.
