PSSM Horse Diet: From Grass to Alfalfa to Supplements – What Works for PSSM Horses

What does a typical PSSM horse diet look like?  Can PSSM horses have oats?  What about alfalfa or grass?  Which PSSM horse supplements will work best for my individual horse?  There’s a lot more to these questions than you’d think, and the answer is that it depends on your individual horse.  That said, hopefully this section will give you an idea on where to start managing your PSSM horse diet!

A PSSM horse diet, or dietary management, usually includes reducing food triggers.  While some don’t have (m)any triggers, some have quite a few!  Mine is the most extreme I’ve seen – he can’t have soy, alfalfa, any full-sugar molasses in feed, canola oil, any oil in high amounts, hay pellets of any kind in any amounts (most are too high potassium, or the binder may be the issue), and possibly supplements with sulfates (this one’s a bit unclear though).

His hard feed for about three years consisted of high protein, moderate NSCs, and moderate fat (about 1/2 the amount recommended for a PSSM1 horse his size – he gets lethargic if NSC is too low which I believe is due to his intolerance to a lot of fat).  You can see his current and previous feed regimens here: PSSM Diet – An Individual Case Study (Jax).

Some common questions I’ve seen asked on the forums:

Can PSSM horses have oats?  Not all horses are the same, so I’ll generalize based on my own experience.  Jax can have oats, but only in small amounts and not if he’s having a day off.  Oats do have really good gut benefits, which is why I feed them occasionally, but I found that more than 1/3 cup daily or feeding even that much on days off could mildly trigger him.

Can PSSM horses have alfalfa?  Again this is based off my experiences and others I’ve read on forums.  This is also very individual; mine can’t even breath in the scent of alfalfa without triggering head shaking, while some can eat alfalfa as their main forage source.  Trial and error is necessary to find the answer here.

Can PSSM horses have grass?  My experience is that Jax can eat grass, and actually do really well on it IF the weather isn’t triggering high sugar content (i.e. sunny days and cold nights).  Stressed grass isn’t real great for him but is acceptable on occasion, whereas old growth, taller grass that’s not super rich or fertilized seems to do the best for him.

As you can see, it depends on the individual on what PSSM horse supplements and management tactics will work for your horse.  See my macronutrient and mineral charts for more on the different dietary approaches specific to PSSM.
